A 'cuttlebone'. The unique bone found in cuttlefish. Well done those who spotted it on thier own.
This was a particularly small specimin at less than three inches. The shot was taken with a macro lens at approximately 125mm showing the particularly delecate bone layers in this specimin. They grow quite large, I had one cuttlebone that measured over 10 inches. I believe various species can be quite big, weighing over 10Kg. The cuttlefish is a member of the Cephalopods, which include the squid and octopii. They are rather strange creatures. They are the only animal to have this type of bone, although it is not true bone like mammals have. They use the bone to store gases to help them with bouyancy. The greeny-blue blood they have is unusual too, using different proteins to most of the animal kingdom. They have a very different type of eye to us - highly developed in its own way. They don't see colour, but can detect polorised light. So they would probably make good photographers. Strange creatures.
